students catch 200-pound rock lobster
Student anglers from California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) in San Luis Obispo, CA, landed a record-sized Pacific rock lobster measuring more than 3 feet long and weighing more than 200 pounds.
The lucky students were aboard the Cal Poly research vessel R/V Robert Gordon when they pulled in the big crustacean from depths of about 900 feet off the Santa Barbara coast. The previous record for a rock lobster caught by students was about 150 pounds.
"This catch is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our student fisheries researchers, who spend countless hours aboard our research vessels at sea collecting data on our coastal resources," said Cal Poly fisheries professor Tempest White.
Rock lobsters are one of California's most valuable commercial fisheries species, with a landed value of more than $30 million annually. They are also popular with recreational anglers, who target them with baited traps or jigs.
chef cooks up world's largest rock lobster
Chef and restaurateur, Nathan Outlaw, has created what is thought to be the world's largest rock lobster weighing in at an impressive 9lb 6oz.
The colossal crustacean was caught by Nathan and his team during a recent trip to Rockall – a small, uninhabited island located in the North Atlantic Ocean.
Rockall is known for its abundance of marine life and is popular with fishermen who seek to catch lobster, cod and halibut.
Speaking about his latest catch, Nathan said: "We were really surprised when we landed this monster lobster. It's without doubt the largest rock lobster I've ever seen."
He continued: "I'm not sure who will get to eat it but I'm sure it'll be someone very lucky."
The record-breaking lobster will now be frozen and sent to Outlaw's Seafood Restaurant in Rock, Cornwall for preparation.

woman finds 2.5-foot rock lobster in net
CARIBBEAN SEA - A woman aboard a fishing boat in the Caribbean Sea made an unexpected catch Tuesday when she hauled in a 2.5-foot-long rock lobster.
The unidentified woman was part of a group of fishers in the area about 35 miles west of Grenada when she reeled in the lobster, which is estimated to weigh 10 pounds.
"We've been fishing here for years and never seen anything like that," said one of the other fishermen, who captured video of the unusual catch.
Despite its size, the lobster was still alive when it was pulled from the water. The fishermen posed for photos with the creature before releasing it back into the sea.
fisherman reels in 10-pound rock lobster
Warren May, a fisherman from Sydney, Australia, was reeling in his day's catch when he felt a strong pull on his line. He soon realized he had snagged a 10-pound rock lobster.
Rock lobsters are not normally found in this area, so May was quite surprised to reel one in. The lobster is now on display at the local aquarium.
"This is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime catch," said May. "I'm glad I was able to get it on land before it wriggled free."
Rock lobsters are typically found in colder water climates such as those found off the coasts of New England and Canada. They can grow up to 3 feet long and weigh up to 20 pounds.
Despite their imposing size, rock lobsters are considered a delicacy and are often served boiled or grilled with butter or garlic sauce.
